What a Shopify replatform costs
A Shopify replatform can cost anything from about $5,000 to well over $80,000. Published agency estimates cluster around $5,000 to $15,000 for a simple, app-assisted move, $15,000 to $75,000 for a mid-market agency project, and $80,000 and up for an enterprise Shopify Plus build with ERP integrations or several storefronts. Design is rarely what drives the total. Data, integrations and custom logic are.
There's no published price list for migrations, because two stores with the same revenue can need completely different amounts of work. What follows is how to work out where yours is likely to land.
What does the budget pay for?
A full replatform usually includes:
- Discovery and scoping: auditing the current store, its integrations and its custom features
- Theme design and build, from a customized premium theme to a fully custom one
- Data migration: products, variants, customers, order history, blog content and reviews
- Integrations with your ERP, warehouse or 3PL, subscription platform, loyalty program and email platform
- Rebuilding custom functionality that lived in plugins or extensions on the old platform
- SEO work: redirect mapping, metadata migration and post-launch checks
- Testing and launch support
What makes a replatform expensive?
- Custom logic on the old platform. Every plugin or extension that changes how pricing, shipping or checkout works has to be replaced with a Shopify app, a Shopify Function or custom development.
- Integrations. ERP, product information and warehouse systems are often the single largest line item, because each one needs mapping, testing and error handling.
- Several storefronts, currencies or markets. Each one multiplies setup and testing.
- B2B requirements like company accounts, custom price lists and payment terms.
- Complicated product data, especially catalogs built around attribute models that don't map neatly onto Shopify's variants.
- A fully custom design rather than a well-chosen theme adapted to your brand.
Which costs do people forget?
- Ongoing app subscriptions. Features that were free plugins on WooCommerce often become monthly app fees on Shopify. Add them up before comparing platforms.
- The Shopify Plus platform fee, if you need Plus. It starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term.
- Customer communication. Passwords can't be migrated between platforms, so plan emails and support time around customers signing in for the first time. Shopify's passwordless customer accounts make this much easier.
- Running both platforms for a few weeks during the switch.
- Post-launch fixes and training for the team that will run the new store.
How long does it take?
Published estimates put a full replatform at about 8 to 16 weeks. Simple moves with few integrations can be faster. Enterprise B2B projects with several integrations usually take longer, and the timeline is often set by how quickly other vendors can support the integration work.
How do I get an accurate quote?
Give agencies the details that drive cost, so quotes can be compared fairly:
- Every integration, and what data moves through it
- Every custom feature, plugin or extension you rely on
- Product and variant counts, and how many years of order history you want to keep
- Markets, currencies and languages
- Any B2B requirements
- The number of URLs that currently get search traffic
Be wary of a quote far below the others. Low quotes often leave out data migration, redirects or integration testing, and those costs come back later as change requests.
Is a replatform worth it?
Compare the total cost of ownership over three years rather than just the project fee. On the old platform, count hosting, security patches, developer time spent on maintenance and the cost of upgrades. On Shopify, count the plan, apps and the replatform itself.
For some stores the move pays for itself quickly, especially when the old platform is approaching the end of support. For others, particularly those with very custom logic, the math favors staying put a while longer. If you're weighing a move to Plus at the same time, rebuilding checkout logic as Shopify Functions is often part of the scope.
